NONOTAK at DIAGE Bangkok: Light You Feel in Your Chest

NONOTAK's light and sound performance at DIAGE 2026, Cloud 11 Bangkok. A firsthand field note on Noemi Schipfer and Takami Nakamoto, with my own recording.

We were standing right beside the subwoofers. Every hit landed in the chest.

That is the detail I keep coming back to when I watch my recording of NONOTAK at DIAGE 2026 in Bangkok. The video holds the lines, the silhouettes and the changes in brightness. The physical pressure stays with the people who were in the room.

When the lights came on, people looked at one another. My reading of those faces was fairly simple: what the fuck just happened?

Two people inside the image

NONOTAK is the duo of Noemi Schipfer and Takami Nakamoto. Their practice brings light, sound and space into a shared composition. MUTEK’s artist profile gives the background.

In the footage, two people stand at their equipment. A bright rectangle fills the space behind them. Parallel lines cut across the image. Then darkness, with almost nothing left for the camera to hold.

Their silhouettes give the composition a human scale. You can see the relationship between a person, a piece of equipment and an image large enough to dominate the room.

A small vocabulary, a physical result

The restraint is part of why this appeals to me. The frame can be almost empty, then suddenly crowded with white lines. Changes in density and brightness carry a surprising amount of intensity.

Standing there, the sound made those changes physical. Watching the recording later, I can recognise the image immediately. I also remember what the camera could never quite capture.

If I made audiovisual art, this is the kind I would want to make.

I said that after the show. I still mean it. Music, geometry and physical sensation coming together with that degree of precision is very close to my own taste.

I kept one minute and fifty-one seconds.
